On Tuesday, October 31st, five people were injured when a Jeep SUV crashed into Crane Coffee, a coffee shop located near 129th Street and West Maple Road in Omaha, Nebraska. The accident happened just before 9:45 am. As of Tuesday night, two of the injured victims remained in the hospital– one with critical injuries. The other 3 victims suffered minor injuries.
Omaha police officers are still trying to get to the bottom of how the crash occurred or why, but what they do know so far is that the Jeep was traveling eastbound on West Maple when the driver appeared to lose control and proceeded to plow through an area of grass, a two-lane road, and then directly into the coffee shop. It was reported that the Jeep was fully lodged into the building at impact which suggests that a braking error may have taken place.
Of the 5 victims injured, four were employees. One was ejected out of the south side of the building. The injuries that resulted varied from minor cuts and abrasions to fractures, a lacerated liver, and a possible esophagus injury.
The driver of the Jeep told police officers that he “blacked out” and didn’t recall what happened when the accident occurred. He suffered minor injuries due to airbag deployment and was released from the hospital that same afternoon.
Speed or alcohol don’t appear to be factors related to the crash. A drug test also turned up negative. The investigation is still ongoing, but the Crane Coffee building is being considered a full loss.
